Our members

We are a 176 strong member-based organisation consisting of Canberra’s leading private medical specialists.

Our members are deeply committed to their vocation, driven not only by their commitment to medicine but by their unwavering desire to guide, inspire, and uplift the health of our entire community.

Board of Directors

The Foundation is governed by a balanced Board of nine outstanding and accomplished individuals.

The dedication of our directors is the foundation of our organisation’s strength and impact. With unwavering commitment, they bring their expertise, passion, and vision to every decision, ensuring our mission not only thrives but evolves to meet the ever-changing needs of our community.

Their tireless work, both seen and unseen, reflects a deep sense of responsibility and pride — not just in what we do, but in why we do it. It is through their leadership, compassion, and relentless pursuit of excellence that we are able to make a lasting difference in the lives we touch every day.

The Board of Directors consists of six Member (Doctor) Directors and three Non-Member (independent) Directors.

Dr Tim Makeham

FRACS, GAICD

Chairman

Dr Makeham is an Otolaryngologist working at The Canberra Hospital, Calvary John James Hospital and Canberra Private Hospital.

He is an affiliated surgeon with the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children and the Sydney Cochlear Implant Centre where he is the lead surgeon for Cochlear Implantation at the Canberra Hospital. The Implant program services both ACT and southern regional New South Wales.

Dr Makeham is the Surgical Supervisor of Otolaryngology training in the ACT and is actively involved in the training of medical students from the Australian National University.

Professor Paul Smith AM

BMBS FRACS FAOA GAICD

Director

Professor Smith is an Orthopaedic Surgeon practicing in Canberra.

His special interests are in pelvic and acetabular surgery, hip and knee reconstruction and replacement surgery and complex revision joint replacement.

His private practice surgery is through the Calvary John James Hospital and the Canberra Specialist Surgical Centre.

Paul is a world leading educator, researcher and practitioner across the private and tertiary sector and is a highly sought after speaker of international acclaim.

Professor Smith was awarded an AM in the 2020 Australia Day Honours.

Dr Nick Gemmell-Smith

MBBS, BSc, FANZCA GAICD

Director

Dr Gemmell-Smith commenced work in Canberra in 1991 and is now a retired clinical anaesthetist.

He has been Deputy Director of the Canberra Hospital (TCH) and on the Canberra Hospital Medical Staff Council.

He has represented the ACT as Federal Council of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA). Over the last 15 years he has undertaken anaesthetic support for paediatric surgical aid missions to Mongolia, Ethiopia, Palestine and the Solomon Islands.

Dr Danielle Blake

BMed MMed FRACP

Director

Dr Blake has worked as a consultant paediatrician in private practice in Canberra since 2014, establishing her own practice as a Director of Capital Paediatrics in 2019.

Danielle actively supports medical education through student placements and in her role as examiner for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in the clinical examinations.

Leading by example, Danielle not only guides the organisation with passion but also rolls up her sleeves to personally fundraise through inspiring charity challenges such as the Tour de Cure cycle challenge.

Ms Alexandra Spark

BCom FCA GAICD

Director

Ms Sandy Spark brings deep financial, audit, risk management, and governance experience to the Board of Directors.

Having retired as a partner of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu in 2021, Sandy pursues a career as a non-executive director on numerous Boards across public and private sectors.

Sandy is highly sought after by Commonwealth and Local Government Departments for her insights and expertise in governance.

Sandy brings a pragmatic perspective in ensuring the business pillars are in place to deliver on the Foundations mission.

Mr Greg Sly

BSC (Hons) GAICD

Director

Mr Greg Sly is a proven business leader, management consultant and entrepreneur with over 25 years in business leadership positions within the Canberra market.

He is a proud and passionate Canberran with extensive understanding of financial management, business operations, business development, client engagement, corporate governance, consulting excellence, and project management.

Greg is an active member of the Canberra community and a proud father of three.

At the heart of our organisation is a small but powerful team of four dedicated individuals, each bringing deep expertise in their respective fields.

This allows us to punch well above our weight, delivering high-quality work with precision and care.

Beyond their professional expertise, this team shares a culture rooted in collaboration, respect, and a shared passion for our mission. Their strong sense of purpose, combined with a binding camaraderie, creates an environment where innovation thrives, challenges are tackled together, and every success is celebrated as a collective win.

Joe Roff

MA (Oxon) BAppFin GAICD

Chief Executive Officer

Mr Joe Roff has built extensive leadership capability over more than 20 years following his retirement from professional sport.

He has actively pursued diverse experiences working across multiple sectors including sport, tertiary, consulting, and in the Not-for-Profit sectors.

Joe is deeply passionate about building teams and strong organisational culture, delivering shared success and quality outcomes, and working with passionate and capable people.

Matt O’Brien

Chief Financial Officer

Mr Matt O’Brien is an experienced senior executive with over 30 years of leadership across the private, public, and not-for-profit sectors.

He has held a range of high-level roles spanning finance, project delivery, and general management.

Based in the Canberra region since 1992, Matt is deeply committed to the mission-driven work of the not-for-profit sector and values the opportunity to give back through meaningful service and leadership.

Matt’s primary goal at the Foundation is to provide financial management support which enables delivery of the Foundation’s strategic objectives.

Outside of his work at the Foundation, Matt is also the Chair of the Marist College Canberra Building Committee and the Marist College Canberra Finance Advisory Committee.

Andrew Blencowe

Project & Asset Development Manager

Mr Andrew Blencowe is a chartered building professional who believes in meaningful projects and motivates project stakeholders to deliver high quality outcomes.

Andrew is widely respected across the property and construction sectors for his unique approach to achieving quality commercial and educational outcomes.

Andrew is current ACT Chapter President for professional peak body the Australian Institute of Building (AIB), an Adjunct Professor for the Built Environment at University of Canberra (UC) and is a Head Coach for the GWS Giants AFL Academy pathway (Canberra Region).

Andrew is a proud husband and father who thrives on supporting his family to achieve their dreams.

Nathalie Maconachie

GAICD

Grants & Relationship Manager

Ms Nathalie Maconachie is a strategic and results- driven leader in the not-for-profit sector with a passion for fundraising, philanthropy, and community connectedness.

Nathalie is dedicated to driving positive change and sustainable impact and has a proven track record of growing community organisations, fostering impactful partnerships, and connecting people with meaningful causes.

Nathalie manages the Foundation’s giving programs and works closely with our private medical specialist members to ensure our philanthropic endeavours provide strategic and impactful improvements to health outcomes in our community.

Nathalie is an accredited yoga teacher and in her spare time offers accessible community classes for all bodies and abilities.

Ms Sam Mostyn was sworn in as Australia’s 28th Governor-General on 1 July 2024.

A businesswoman and community leader, Ms Mostyn is known for her exceptional service to the Australian community. She has a long history in executive and governance roles across diverse sectors, including business, sport, climate change, the arts, policy and not-for-profit.

Her Excellency has dedicated more than a decade to ‘for purpose’ boards including the GO Foundation and Climateworks Australia. During this time she also served on the boards of Tonic Media and Global Business & Sustainable Development Commission.

Ms Mostyn was pleased to accept the ongoing patronage of the John James Foundation, acknowledging that the Office of the Governor General continues to recognise the significant positive impact the Foundation has in our community.
